Jarred’s descent had been surprisingly long, like some hellish playground slide. He was beneath the snow but definitely on a steep slope. He flailed his arms and legs, trying to arrest his descent, but then the injured ankle bumped into something hard and a burst of pain shot up his leg. The white snow all around him dimmed, as his vision went momentarily dark. After that, half-conscious, everything took on a surreal quality. And still he slid.

In a moment of clarity, he tried to make sense of what was happening. It must have been some deeper section of the quarry, hard to spot because of the optical illusion created by the nearly featureless snow. And perhaps the steep slope was a driveway for trucks leading down to the bottom.

As some point, he veered too far to the side of the driveway and felt himself slip over a steep edge. Again, he tried to grab something, anything, to arrest his fall, but nothing felt solid around him. It was all crumbling snow that broke into pieces when he tried to take hold of it. He felt himself dropping. And then he finally slammed into the ground below. It was solid enough that it knocked the wind out of him, and his vision dimmed again.

This time, the darkness lingered at the edges of his vision. Even after he’d come to a stop, the snow continued to fall down on top of him for a few seconds, burying him. When it finally stopped, he was completely buried in snow, struggling to stay conscious. He managed to raise his left arm and push through the loose mound of snow on top of him. Then he rolled to his right, breaking out of the mound. He felt the wind blowing into his hood. When he opened his eyes, he could tell that he was, indeed, at the bottom of a large pit. A sheer rock wall rose up in the distance.

He rolled onto his belly, but that only caused another twinge of pain in his leg. Jarred dragged himself forward, pulling his body out from under the snow. An enormous gray lump rose from the snow nearby. As he drew near, he saw blood-soaked fur, blood-speckled snow, a single paw sticking up. He swept some of the snow aside to reveal the body of the wolf, the large gunshot wound in its neck, the open mouth, lifeless eyes.

At least I killed it, so it can’t go after the others, he thought.

He kept going past the wolf, and his hand found some hard, cold object beneath the snow. He pulled it up to reveal the barrel of the rifle. It slipped from his fingers and fell. When he tried to grab it again, he couldn’t quite get a grip on it. The darkness was closing in before him. The throbbing pain was turning into a kind of aching numbness, dragging him deeper and deeper into the depths with every heartbeat.

I’m going to die out here, he thought.
